AWAKENING

All saints and sages communicate that the immediate human experience is not "it." Whether it's the "veil of Maya" in the Indian traditions, the intermediary "Demiurge" of Greek philosophy, the "play of the ego" in Western self-development literature, or just plain "ignorance," what we experience is not the nature of reality.

THE ILLUSION

Whether we put it in religious terms as something God has placed in front of our eyes to hide creation, or use biology and see our current evolutionary stage as partial consciousness, the veil of ignorance is a fact. Our minds create layer upon layer of interpretation, explanation and meaning onto the world. And how different those layers are from human to human - and how dearly we cling to them and are willing to fight and die for them - says it all. Were our views of life and experience real, we would all be in agreement and get on with it in peace and prosperity. For the mind, for the regular human consciousness, having an experience outside of this illusion is impossible. It is a phenomenon arising out of the mind itself, and the mind cannot go beyond itself.

PENETRATING THE VEIL

So the phenomenon we refer to as awakening, is not of the human realm. It belongs fully to what the mystics have been exploring since time immemorial. It is what all religious prophets or true philosophers have been trying to allude to through art, poetry, ritual and mystical expressions. They point to it, refer to it and do their best, but it cannot be experienced directly in the normal human way. Which is why it cannot be proven, demonstrated or copied. It only arises when the system is ready and on its own accord. It is beyond the mind.

Therefore it is said: "The Tao is mindless of union with humanity; when people are unminding, they unite with the Tao."

GOING BEYOND

Awakening is not the solution to anything. It's a spontaneous happening that usually takes place after great amounts of seeking and striving. But for some who just keep going beyond the regular human assumptions and see layer upon layer of false beliefs fall away organically, it's a quiet dawning of peace. For some it's a mystical revolution, for others it's a mundane "aha." But no matter the circumstance or volume, the structure that holds illusion together, shatters. No matter how much misunderstanding remains in the mind, and no matter the strenght of conviction, the ability to hold it all together becomes greatly diminished.

For most people it will still take years to harvest the true riches and truly embody the freedom that is offered. Some never fulfill it and just continue life with the story of a great spiritual union that took place in the past, and as an event rather than the living reality.

Awakening is the deconstruction of normal human understanding and a great emptying out of truth and being. It's the return to innocence and incompetence. It's the light of God, and the ground of being. It's beyond anything the mind can conceive, and yet the most obvious and immediate that life has to offer.
