THE PATH OF A MAN

Throughout history, men have had collective stories, defined paths, and traditional frameworks that supported and guided boys towards growth and initiation into manhood. Taking one's place in society as a man was a journey. It was something that was guided and supported by the initiated adult men. This is absent in our modern world. Instead, men are confused and lost; lacking true connection, deep purpose, healthy authority, real value, and not least inner fulfillment.

THE PATH

What is the essential difference between a boy and a man? It is inner and outer responsibility. The boy knows not how to do this on his own. He only knows of striving to live up to the expections of others. He knows only of an ideal of a man that his mind has conjured up as a result. He has this ideal... and then he has his own inner reality. That reality is hidden from others and pushed deep down as it doesn't conform to the ideal. Often to become unseen to himself also. To cope, he learns to manipulate, cajole, please, pretend, lie, deceive, brag, play victim or to use force and aggression to be a "man." And to get things his way. What he is not doing is taking full responsibility for his past, his baggage, his beliefs, his actions and his effect on the world. For that he needs to come face to face with himself one way or another. The path will need to penetrate the veil of his pride; that mask that covers his fear. The path is to take full responsibility for himself and for doing what needs to be done.

THE SUPPORT

For that to be possible, he needs to remember what all men have needed to acknowledge since time immemorial: Although the ability to stand alone is important, his true value is measured through his part in the whole. It is in his actions for the group, as a member and needed part in his tribe and in his world, that his truth as a man exists. This is where he is needed. And it is by being needed that he feels fulfilled. And it is by feeling fulfilled that he can act and speak from his authority and his freedom. The modern man must step forward into himself, and from there into the world, not backwards into his shelter and hiding place where only loneliness and a pointless existence awaits.

THE DEDICATION

Through a deep, dedicated and relentless journey into himself, and often mirrored in journeys into the deep darkness and despair of the circumstances of life. He learns to be brought down: down on his knees and down into the depths he fears to tread. But as he learns the descent, he also learns the ascent: of taking charge and using his power to regain balance from within. As he learns to embody his darkness, he learns to embody the light. And he comes to see that this light is not truly his own. It wasn't about being recognised for his magnificence, but to serve: his community, his world, and his true self - from the highest place.

THE TRUE MAN

This man is not beholden to the old ways of comparison in himself and to others. Instead he is deeply grounded in his true inner being. By knowing himself, what he stands for and his strengths and gifts, he becomes a mountain. He cannot be moved unless moved by truth. His journey has brought true wisdom. Not theoretical knowledge, but experiental understanding. Wisdom. And along the way he lost the need to be right and for others to look up to him. This frees him from his inner constraints and means he partakes in life from the most valuable place there is. He is the wise man that everyone respects. He is a true leader of others.
