SELF-DEVELOPMENT

Us humans love to believe we have free will and that our actions follow our own choices. But when we truly observe ourselves, we come to realise that most of what we do comes from our auto-pilot. This is fairly easy to see in the mundane stuff of our lives, but harder to accept and come to terms with when we're dealing with events where there appear to be alternatives, and when there's analysis og thought processes involved in a decision. However, the idea that I made a choice is a post-action event meaning that immediately following an action, there is a mental impulse (a thought) that identifies with the action and in effect saying "I did that." So no matter what movement our bodes do, or what words come out of our mouths, there is an automatic programming that will take ownership after the fact. No matter what we do, there is a natural identification that takes place inside of us. No matter our lack of free will, the subjective experience is the opposite.

AUTO-PILOT

Our auto-pilot (often referred to as "the Ego") is the sum total of myriad smaller processes that are embedded in our subconscious. A lot of it was formed very early in life, which is what makes it so incredibly challenging to create change in a grown human being. Our brains are wired by evolution to automate most parts of life, and that wiring is all about mastering the environment in a survival-based perspective. It's about efficiency, simplicity and creating order out of chaos. Since so much is just pure biology, and the wiring happened before the brain and system was fully formed, the ability to develop the self is like walking in steep terrain: it needs time, effort and energy. It doesn't happen on its own, only through will, willingness and practice.

REAL CHANGE

It can take time, but once we get the hang of changing ourselves for real, and once the mechanisms are seen through, rapid change begins to happen. In a way, it feels like reclaiming one's life because we move from past and outdated programming and into alignment with our own present life. We're moving from the inferior child living under the thumb of the parents, to the upright adult who decides for him/herself.

SUFFERING KEEPS US LOCKED IN

The foundation of the auto-pilot is suffering, because life learns to orient itself away from pain, but pain is produced whenever there is any form of insecurity, uncertainty or confusion - which is almost all the time. Any experience outside our comfort zones (the familiar and controlled) leads to unpleasant charges in our emotions and thoughts. So our main lesson to learn is to separate suffering and pain. Suffering disappears when we learn to be present with pain and to not follow our automatic interpretation that follow of "wrongness." Instead we grow in our capacity to remain present when this happens and move through it to the other side. Thus we find freedom from the automatic signal and an opportunity to experience what is on the other side of our programming.

HAPPINESS & FULFILLMENT

Only now can a better life dawn. We learn to not take our own interpretations for granted, to not listen to our thoughts, and to not trust our emotions. We begin to sense our system differently and move into new and novel ways of dealing with life. As we see through our misunderstandings and challenge our regular ways, life is finally moving in the natural way, which is in a way as if things happen for the first time. Relating to ourselves and to others in a fresh way rather than as if we know what is going on or preventing potential wrongness, is completely new to most people.

But finally we have a chance to be and become who we want to be rather than who qw accidentally became as a result of infinite generations of human misunderstandings.
